10 Ways to Spring Clean Your Sex Life and Make It Sizzle
Hey there! It’s Renée Yvonne, The Gen Sexologist, here to help Gen Xers and Baby Boomers add some spark to their sex lives. Today, we’re diving into an unexpected but oh-so-fun topic: spring cleaning your sex life!
We’ve just "sprung forward" with daylight savings time, and while we’ve all lost an hour of precious sleep (ugh, I feel it too), the longer days bring an opportunity to refresh and renew. Especially after a year (or more) of pandemic-induced blahs, it’s time to shake things up—in and out of the bedroom.
Here are 10 ways to clean out the cobwebs (literally and figuratively) and bring fresh energy to your intimate life. Ready? Let’s go!
1. Declutter Your Toys
First things first: check out your toy collection.
- No toys yet? This is your moment to explore. Maybe it’s time to invest in a classic like the Magic Wand (which, by the way, is an excellent neck massager if you’re feeling shy about its other uses). Or try something new, like a clitoral stimulator—there are plenty of options to spice things up.
- Too many toys that suck and not in a good way? If you’ve got a drawer full of underwhelming gadgets, it’s time to toss the ones that don’t spark joy.
- Upgrade: Rechargeable toys are the way to go! No one wants to scramble for batteries mid-fun. Let’s leave that drama in 2005, okay?
2. Refresh Your Bedroom
Your bedroom should be a sanctuary of seduction.
- Invest in new sheets—think silky, soft, or just plain sexy.
- Smudge with sage or Palo Santo to clear out stale energy.
- Add dimmable lighting, candles, or romantic art to create a vibe.
- Pro tip: Keep distractions like laundry piles or work papers out of sight. Romance and spreadsheets don’t mix.
3. Tune Up Frequency and Quality
Feeling like you’re not getting enough? Or maybe you’re craving deeper connection during the time you do have?
This is your chance to talk with your partner about how to balance frequency with quality. Need help starting that convo? Download my free guide: "How to Tell Your Partner What You Want in Bed Without Hurting Their Feelings." Link below!
4. Take a Class
There’s always something new to learn!
- Sign up for a virtual workshop on oral techniques, sensual massage, or new positions.
- Keep an eye out for my spring classes—you might just learn a trick or two to leave your partner breathless.
5. Work Those Kegels
Yes, both women and men have pelvic floor muscles!
- To locate them: Imagine stopping your pee midstream—that’s your Kegel.
- Work them anywhere: In line at the store, pumping gas, or while cooking dinner.
- Ladies, consider adding tools like Kegel balls or jade eggs to intensify the workout and enhance your orgasms.
6. Cut Out Toxic Partners
Let’s be real: If a relationship is draining your energy or causing stress, it might be time to Marie Kondo that situation. Easier said than done, I know, but nothing blocks intimacy faster than toxicity.
7. Revamp Your Lingerie Drawer
Out with the old, ill-fitting, or uninspiring pieces, and in with something that makes you feel hot.
- Think lacy chemises, playful costumes, or even fishnet stockings.
- And remember, Confidence is the sexiest thing you can wear.
8. Stock Up on Lube
Repeat after me: Lube is your best friend!
- Silicone-based for long-lasting slickness. Not compatible with silicone toys
- Water-based for versatility (and toy compatibility and latex condoms)
- Always have it handy because nothing kills the mood faster than running out at the worst possible moment.
9. Get an STI Test
Spring is the perfect time for a health checkup. Even in committed relationships, regular STI testing is important. Staying informed ensures you and your partner are safe, healthy, and ready to enjoy each other fully.
10. Consider Sex Coaching or Counseling
If you’re not getting what you want—or you’re unsure how to ask for it—let’s talk!
- From reigniting passion to exploring fantasies like threesomes, I can guide you through open, honest conversations with your partner.
- Throughout March, I’m offering free 30-minute coaching sessions in exchange for a testimonial. This is your chance to dip your toes into sex coaching without the pressure.
